Netflix’s latest show has pulled in over 1.65 billion hours of viewing time, making it the most popular series on record for the entertainment network. The Korean drama revolves around a game in which individuals partake in risky challenges in order to pay off debts that they may owe. The series was written and created by Hwang Dong-hyuk and stars Lee Jung-Jae as a gambler who struggles financially and is trying to earn funds in order to have custody of his daughter.
Netflix has not confirmed a Season 2 of the series but is expected to renew it for another round. Most of the city scenes for the show were filed in Daejeon, South Korea. The show premise revolves around wealth disparity and capitalism along with the exportation of South Korean Media to the Western world. This adds to the likes of other Korean entertainment forms such as K-pop and K-Dramas, contributing to the phenomenon known as the “Korean Wave”.
