Art Basel Miami Beach Returns for 2021

The popular art show known as Art Basel returns for 2021 after a hiatus from the Covid-19 epidemic in Miami Beach starting this Thursday, December 2nd. The show was created in 1970 by Basel gallerists Ernst Beyeler, Trudl Bruckner and Balz Hilt.  It attracted over 16,000 visitors in its inaugural year, who viewed work presented by 90 galleries representing 10 countries. Thirty art publishers also participated. By 1975, five years after its creation, the Basel show reached almost 300 exhibitors. The participating galleries came from 21 countries, attracting 37,000 visitors. The 2020 edition was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A Who’s Who of Attendees

In 2018, the show had over 83,000 people attend over the course of five days.  Works from Picasso, Warhol, and other contemporary artists are all on display. Kanye West and Pharrell Williams have both displayed pieces at the event as well as the late Virgil Abloh, who recently passed after a battle with cancer. Kid Cudi and Cardi B will be some of the artists scheduled to perform at the late-night parties that accompany the event. Costs are $65 for 12 to 62-year-old attendees, at $50 for any older than that. Face mask will be required by all that attend the event.
